Where do you attend school and what activities are you involved in?

I am a student at the University of Virginia pursuing an undergraduate degree in aerospace engineering and a minor in technology ethics. At college I have gotten involved with a pre-professional engineering fraternity that has gotten me access to numerous unique opportunities. Additionally in high school I have a variety of honors, most notably regional science fair awards and a 3rd place essay award in the Herndon science competition on energy and propulsion for the future of space travel.

What have your teaching opportunities been outside of Fairfax Collegiate?

I have had experience tutoring in a school organized club called RISE which focuses on tutoring kids in math and science as well as aiding them with science fair projects. I also tutored privately with a neighbor consistently for about a year who was in middle school learning Algebra 1 and we worked together to improve his grades by significant margins. I also have babysat kids as well as volunteered at my dance studio to assistant teach classes. I've taught kids in upper elementary school as well as three year olds which has taught me a lot about emotional learning and support in addition to academic learning.

What sort of experience have you had in the subject you’ll be teaching this summer?

I have the most experience in math and science classes. I've taken many levels of calculus and algebra including ordinary differential equations, multi variable calculus, linear algebra, calculus 1 and 2, algebra 1 and 2, pre-calc, and geometry. I have also taken college level engineering design, chemistry, physics, computer science, and geology.

What excites you about teaching and working with students?

I love that kids are sponges - they are eager, ask questions, and are genuinely curious about how the world works. Although it takes practice, when you are able to grab the attention of a group of students, it's such a rewarding experience to watch them grow both academically and in their confidence. I also was in their shoes not long ago taking SAT's and AMC math contests so I understand their perspectives and the challenges they are facing.

Outside of work, what are some hobbies you enjoy?

I love to sing and dance! I'm in an Acapella group at UVA as well as a dance club and believe that balance of outside activities is just as important as being a good student!
