Where do you attend school, and what what are you studying?

I am a rising junior at William & Mary studying elementary education. My academically focused extracurriculars and achievements include being the literacy lab coordinator for the Griffin School Partnership program (reading tutoring for elementary schoolers), being a member of the Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society, and having achieved Dean's List for four semesters. In high school, I was a member of the National Honor Society and various subject specific honor societies (math, English, Spanish, science, social studies). I was a tutor for underclassmen at my high school during my senior year.

What have your teaching opportunities been outside of Fairfax Collegiate?

I have experience tutoring underclassmen while I was in high school. In college, I have volunteered as a tutor to elementary and middle school students primarily in English and language arts, but also in other subjects like math and science. I regularly volunteer helping teachers at my former elementary school by pulling out small groups of students to proctor spelling tests or give extra reading help. Although this is not related to academics, I was also a swim instructor for five years teaching children aged five to 18.

What sort of experience have you had in the subject you’ll be teaching this summer?

I primarily tutor elementary and middle school students in English and language arts. This tutoring ranges from decoding and fluency with the elementary schoolers to reading comprehension and text analysis with the middle schoolers. Many of my major and non-major classes have involved writing long essays, reflections, and op-eds.

What excites you about teaching and working with students?

I love being able to share my excitement and interest in academics with students! Being able to help students find a love for learning or deepen their interests in learning is one of the most exciting and rewarding parts of teaching. Not only do I help students learn, but when working with students they teach me about their interests and perspectives on the subject matter which is incredibly engaging.

Outside of work, what are some hobbies you enjoy?

My hobbies and activities outside of work and school include drawing, reading, running, swimming. I love to read about art history and then draw or paint from master works in my free time. If I am not doing any of the listed activities previously mentioned, then I am probably trying new eateries with friends!
