Where do you attend school, and what what are you studying?
I graduated from the University of Virginia with Distinction, earning a B.S. in Statistics and a second major in Economics with a concentration in Industrial Organization. At UVA I was a Teaching Assistant in the Statistics Department, a Research Assistant in the Economics Department, and VP of Development (helped train new analysts) for the Virginia Consulting Group (UVA's premier consulting club that gets paid clients). I was also inducted into Mu Sigma Rho, which is the national honor society for Statistics, and was a Resident Advisor for 2 years.
What have your teaching opportunities been outside of Fairfax Collegiate?
I started teaching in 2018 as a private math tutor and have been tutoring on and off since then. I have primarily tutored in math and have taught math classes ranging from 3rd Grade to AP Calculus BC/AP Statistics, as well as IOWA test prep. I have experience tutoring students in remedial, grade-level, and accelerated situations and have adapted my style depending on how the student learns. In 2024 I started working as a TA at UVA and have helped with 5 different statistics classes
What subjects have you taught with Fairfax Collegiate in the past?
I started working for Fairfax Collegiate in the summer of 2021 and am excited for my 5th summer here. I have mainly taught classes in mathematics and have also taught a few computer science and science classes as well.
What sort of experience have you had in the subject you’ll be teaching this summer?
For the Math classes I am teaching, I have taken upper-level math classes at UVA (Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra, Probability Theory, and Mathematical Statistics) and have also taught some of the math classes as a previous instructor with Fairfax Collegiate.
For the Computer Science classes I am teaching, my Statistics major included coursework in R/Python programming, machine learning, and databases. I have a wide range of projects applying these skills to a variety of different topics. I have also worked as a Teaching Assistant for intro and intermediate/advanced R programming classes and got a lot of experience working with other students.
For the SAT Math class I am teaching, I scored a 780 on the Math section of the SAT and was a National Merit Commended Student.
What excites you about teaching and working with students?
I enjoy teaching because I enjoy sharing my enthusiasm for learning with students. This enthusiasm stems from having several passionate teachers over the years. I enjoy helping students reach the "aha" moment when figuring out a concept, and I try to make learning as interactive as I can. I also encourage students to ask me questions when they are stuck. To me, teaching is the opportunity to give back and get students excited about learning, not just for the class they take this summer, but for everything beyond as well.
Outside of work, what are some hobbies you enjoy?
I enjoy watching UVA Basketball and Football as well as DC sports, hanging out with my friends and family, playing video games, and working out.
