Frequently Asked Questions Fairfax Collegiate Summer 2024

As the area’s largest provider of academic enrichment summer classes, Fairfax Collegiate has a wide variety of courses in need of instructors. Our subjects include writing, mathematics, science, public speaking, admissions prep, engineering, computer science, film, photo, design, technology, and gaming.

Fairfax Collegiate provides in-person classes at nine locations throughout Northern Virginia: Ashburn, Chantilly, Dulles, McLean, Reston-Edlin, Reston-NVHC, South Riding, Tysons, and Vienna. You may indicate your location preferences in the application. In addition, we provide online classes via Zoom which can be taught remotely, and you may indicate your preference for this in the application as well.
We maintain a maximum student-to-teacher ratio of 12:1. Depending on the subject and other factors, we either close a class at 12 students or allow it to get larger and include a TA or additional instructor in the class. Some classes will have multiple instructors or a TA even if there are fewer than 12 students.
All staff members are given blue polo shirts with the Fairfax Collegiate logo, and these must be worn each day. Besides that, the dress code is casual with most staff members choosing to wear shorts and sneakers.
Starting pay for our summer positions is as follows: $15/hour for assistant instructors, $20/hour for instructors, $25/hour for lead instructors, and $30/hour for location directors.
The application allows you to apply as either a TA or an instructor. The decision to offer a lead instructor role specifically is based on your prior course load with Fairfax Collegiate, reviews from your past location directors, your education level, and/or existing employment as a full-time teacher.
In May, all staff members are sent a Google Classroom link which contains a variety of assignments to complete. These range from submitting tax forms and a staff profile to studying training guides about how to teach our classes effectively and navigate our staff portal. You will also have the opportunity to sign up for in-person and online training sessions held throughout the summer.
