Fairfax Collegiate Debate Society Courses

Debate Society 4-6

The Fairfax Collegiate after-school Debate Society for 4th to 6th grades offers friendly debates on engaging topics of personal interest to students, such as whether school uniforms should be required, whether cellphones should be banned in school, and whether school should be year-round. The debates are not formally judged, but the instructor give individual critiques of student presentations.

Every student participates in a debate every week, and every week there is also a training session teaching a skill needed for debate, including how to speak in public, how to present and rebut an argument, proper use of evidence, and techniques of persuasive language. The spirit of the course is the practice and study of debate, in an atmosphere or fun and fellowship.
