Science Fair Workshop

Science Fair in a Day

Curious about science fairs but don't know where to begin? Join us for Science Fair in a Day, a free workshop where students can experience the excitement of scientific discovery in a fun, casual environment.

This engaging event is perfect for young scientists eager to learn how to design experiments, collect data, and present their findings - just like they would in a real science fair. Through interactive activities, students will gain the confidence and skills they need to take on their own future science fair projects.

Parents are also welcome during the event. Fairfax Collegiate's team of Directors will be on-site for open house sessions, tours, and Q&A. Parents are also invited to attend the project presentations in the final 20 minutes of the workshop.

Founded in 1993, Fairfax Collegiate is Northern Virginia’s academic enrichment provider, serving thousands of students each year through our popular summer program. Join us this summer and experience the joy of learning with Fairfax Collegiate.

Workshop Course Description

  • The workshop begins with an overview of the steps involved in a science fair: planning, gathering data, and presenting results. After a class discussion about the scientific process, instructors will survey the class and choose the topic to investigate. Students then will form a hypothesis and work together to gather the data needed to test it. Once the data collection is complete, instructors will lead students through an analysis of the data and coach them in preparing to give a short presentation with the findings.
  • The workshop is primarily designed for students who have never participated in a science fair, but is also open to students who have prior experience.
  • Topic selection and data collection methods in the Grade 3 to 4 workshop will align with Virginia Science Standards of Learning for grades 3 and 4.
  • Topic selection and data collection methods in the Grade 5 to 6 workshop will align with Virginia Science Standards of Learning for grades 5 and 6.
