Intro to AI Workshop

Say Hello to AI

Artificial intelligence is *everywhere* right now, but do you know how it really works? Join us for Say Hello to AI, a free event where students can take a first look "behind the curtain" and learn from knowledgeable instructors about the benefits and risks of working with AI.

The event is structured around hands-on exploration of two powerful and accessible tools: ChatGPT and Google’s Teachable Machine. Students will learn how computers can be trained to recognize patterns and respond to questions using AI models.

When arriving for the event, parents are also invited to meet with Fairfax Collegiate's team of Directors, who will be on-site for open house sessions, tours, and Q&A.

Founded in 1993, Fairfax Collegiate is Northern Virginia’s academic enrichment provider, serving thousands of students each year through our popular summer program. Join us this summer and experience the joy of learning with Fairfax Collegiate.

Workshop Course Description

  • The workshop begins with a class discussion to define AI and identify where it appears in everyday life. Students will then use Teachable Machine to create and test their own image-recognition model, gaining a basic understanding of how AI “learns” through examples. Later in the day, students will interact with ChatGPT, experimenting with creative prompts to explore how generative AI responds to language.
  • No prior coding or AI experience is required. Activities are designed to be playful and age-appropriate while still encouraging critical thinking about the uses and limitations of AI. Students will leave with a basic understanding of how AI works and how they can use it to create, explore, and ask questions.
  • Students will be divided into a 3rd-4th grade group and a 5th-6th grade group. The groups will work on similar activities but at slightly different paces and level of complexity.
