Intro to 3D Printing

Rising Grades 4 to 6

Get started with 3D printing.

Create digital models using computerassisted design software, and print models on 3D printers.

Learn about the commercial and industrial applications of 3D printing.

Create objects around themes such as cities, puzzles, and fantasy objects.

This course is a great fit for students who want to learn how 3D printers work and enjoy creating objects of their own design. Class activities mix short demonstrations with guided practice, giving students a friendly introduction to preparing model files, setting up prints, and understanding each step of the printing process.

Students learn how to care for their printers, how to prepare simple designs using beginner-friendly software, and how to get their files ready for printing. They explore basic modeling tools, try out easy design challenges like nameplates and small figures, and experiment with slicing settings that affect how their objects print. As they complete several prints, they build confidence in solving small problems, adjusting files, and watching their ideas become solid objects. Fairfax Collegiate provides a class set of 3D printers for students to use, and provides each student with a laptop.

By the end of the course, students take home a collection of 6-8 printed objects they created or customized, and they will retain access to their digital designs. They leave with a strong foundation in 3D printing and the excitement to keep designing and exploring new STEM skills.
