This course is designed for students who enjoy computers, video games, and creative challenges and want a quick introduction to building games of their own. Lessons and guided tutorials help students learn step by step as they program game logic, experiment with core design tools, and see their ideas come to life on screen.
Students explore essential game-development skills such as movement and physics, collectibles, hazards, menus, and simple enemy behavior. They build on a starter project as they create levels, import and animate sprites, add sound effects and music, and customize gameplay using GameMaker’s visual scripting tools. Fairfax Collegiate provides laptops with GameMaker software for each student.
At the end of the course, families receive digital copies of all student projects. Students leave with a strong foundation in beginner-friendly game design and the confidence to continue exploring programming, creativity, and interactive media at home.
