Fairfax Collegiate Math Power meets weekly for two hours during the school year. In small-group classes, students learn elementary math using the Singapore Math Primary Mathematics curriculum to enrich and extend the math instruction in local public and private school.
Singapore Math is the national math curriculum of Singapore. Students from Singapore regularly come out on top in international comparisons of national math achievement such as Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) and the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA).
Singapore Math focuses on problem solving and is built upon five supporting components:
Concepts: Numerical, Geometrical, Algebraic, Statistical, Probabilistic, Analytical
Skills: Numerical calculation, Algebraic manipulation, Spatial visualization, Data analysis, Measurement, Use of mathematical tools, Estimation
Processes: Reasoning, communication and connections, Thinking skills and heuristics, Applications and modelling
Attitudes Interest, Confidence, Beliefs, Perseverance
Metacognition: Monitoring of one's own thinking, Self-regulation of learning
